Mass Appraisal for the Masses

Mass Appraisal for the Masses

Howdy everyone!

As part of my new job working for the Center for Land Economics, my co-founder Greg Miller and I have taken over day to day management at ye old Progress & Poverty substack, and one of our duties is for one of us to put up a new post every week.

Obviously I'll still be blogging here for all my personal stuff, but if you're at all interested in my Georgism/Land Value Tax/Land Valuation work, I'll be posting that stuff over there as part of my job. I will be sure to link the most interesting articles here when they drop so anyone who follows me here won't missing anything.

For instance, today we dropped the first part of a new article series: Mass Appraisal for the Masses.

Have you ever wondered how property valuations are performed? In this article we demystify the seemingly arcane process and show how it's done. Further, we answer the following questions:

  • What is market value?
  • How do we make valuations accurate?
  • How do we make valuations consistent?
  • How do we make valuations fair?

Furthermore, in the coming weeks the CLE and I are going to launch a new open source library that assists with mass appraisal, both evaluating existing valuations, and giving you the power to make your own using datasets derived from local government open data portals.

Stay tuned for more!
